I don't like to stereotype but it is often women that aren't up to snuff on vehicle maintenance, not necessarily in terms of timely submission to maintenance at the dealership but routine maintenance that the owner is responsible for. Also of note is what isn't commonly realized: with the passage of time, the Prius, like all vehicles, will lose some of its fuel economy. Some things I want to know about this woman's case are: maintenance habits, whether or not she bought the vehicle new or used, where she buys her gasoline and whether or not this woman realizes there're winter and summer blends of gasoline. Winter blends used in summer result in terrible gas economy, something we experienced here in California because it got warm earlier than usual. Source of gasoline also has an impact: Fuel purchased from Costco and Sam's Club are not of the same quality as that which might be purchased from brand names like Shell and Chevron.
